VARIOUS OF PEOPLE EATINGGUANGZHOU, CHINA - MAY 28, 2025: The traditional Dragon Boat Festival was celebrated across China with colorful events and high-energy races on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Major cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou hosted lively celebrations. In Guangzhou, dragon boat races drew large crowds as teams paddled ornately decorated long boats in a vibrant display of tradition and competition. The holiday commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a Chinese poet and statesman who drowned himself in the Miluo River in 278 B.C. after being exiled. According to legend, villagers raced out in boats to save him, beating drums to ward off evil spirits and tossing rice into the river to keep fish from consuming his body.
