TikTok user '9keeks' was strolling through New York City when she noticed something strange yet completely ignored, steam constantly rising from the ground.

Curious, she asked around, only to find that most people had never even questioned it. So, she posted a quick TikTok, and it blew up, sparking a wave of hilarious and informative comments.

One user explained, “Many buildings in midtown are heated with steam heat provided by Con Ed. This is a release of those steam pipes. If you don’t release the steam, the pipes could explode.” Another joked, “Smoke from the Ninja Turtles’ pizza oven.” And the most-liked comment? “If the smoke is white, it means a new Mayor has been chosen.”
