Protesters outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence on Yafo Street held photos of captive loved ones and waved Israeli flags, chanting slogans against Netanyahu and his government. The rallies came as diplomatic efforts intensified to reach a hostage agreement, coinciding with recent nationwide protests marking 600 days since the hostages were taken. Hamas announced it had delivered its response to the latest ceasefire proposal, mediated by Egypt and Qatar, which was presented by US envoy Steve Witkoff. The group issued a statement demanding a "permanent ceasefire, complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and guarantees for sustained humanitarian aid" to Palestinians in the besieged enclave. Under the proposed framework, Hamas offered to release 10 Israeli captives and return the bodies of 18 others in exchange for an agreed number of Palestinian prisoners. However, the group did not explicitly accept the US-backed plan, stating its response was based on "national consultations" and its responsibility toward Palestinian suffering. Israel launched its military offensive on Gaza in October 2023 following a Hamas attack, resulting in the deaths of nearly 54,400 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to local health authorities. Aid agencies have repeatedly warned of famine risks for Gaza’s over 2 million residents due to severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. Writing by Sibel Uygun
