With a population of 17 million, the country has 23 million bicycles. According to data from the Dutch Cyclists' Union, the Netherlands accounts for 2.3% of the world's one billion bicycles. Approximately 1 million new bicycles are sold in the country each year, with the majority of the population using second-hand bicycles. Bikes are used for 31% leisure, 22% work, 18% going to school, and 14% shopping in the Netherlands. With the presence of bike-sharing programs, there are around 22,000 bicycles available at over 300 different locations in the country where half a million bicycles are stolen each year. The United Nations General Assembly declared June 3rd as "World Bicycle Day" in 2018 with the aim of promoting bicycle usage. In Europe, where cycling culture is widespread, the Netherlands is known as the "land of bicycles”. The world's most bicycle-friendly cities are, Utrecht in the Netherlands, Münster in Germany, Antwerp in Belgium, Copenhagen in Denmark, and Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
