MAICAO, LA GUAJIRA DEPARTMENT, COLOMBIA - MAY 21: On the northern coast of Colombia, in the city of Maicao, the Omar Ibn Al Khattab Mosque stands as the country’s largest Islamic religious site and the third most prominent in Latin America, after major mosques in Brazil and Argentina. Inaugurated on September 17, 1997, the mosque was built in the style of classical Islamic architecture and fully funded by the local Muslim population. It has since become a powerful symbol of the religious and cultural diversity that defines this border city. Maicao is home to a large Muslim immigrant community, primarily of Lebanese origin, followed by Syrians and Palestinians who began arriving in the 1950s.
