Syria: Victims of Israeli Raid in Beit Jinn, Syria, recount the events of that day
Beit Jinn, Syria - June 12, 2025 Israeli military says it arrested Hamas members in Syria June 12, 2025 Israeli troops entered the southwestern Syrian town of Beit Jinn in the early hours of Thursday and arrested several individuals. The Israeli military said those detained were members of Hamas and accused them of planning attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers in Syria. According to the Israeli military, the operation was based on intelligence gathered in recent weeks and resulted in the seizure of firearms and ammunition. The detainees were taken into Israel for further questioning. One of the captives confirmed by local residents and relatives was Amer Badrawi. According to Amer’s brother Khaled Badrawi, the operation terrified residents. “They took my brother Amer, they terrified the children and they were crying. When I came, I found that my brother had been taken, I went to my neighbors, who were also screaming, suddenly two Israeli vehicles arrived and the soldiers ordered me to stand down and then leave the area. I went back home and heard gunshots that caused the death of the civilian" Khaled was quoted. Syria's interior ministry disputed the claims, stating that the seven people arrested were civilians from the area. The ministry also reported that one person was killed during the raid. Hamas has not issued a statement. Asked whether anyone was killed in its raid, the Israeli military told Reuters that when one of the suspected members attempted to flee, shots were fired and "a hit was identified". According to local residents in Beit Jenin, one of the residents killed was 30-year old Muhammad Hamadeh, a father of 2 children. According to the victim's cousin, Ali Hamadeh, the operation was swift. " They entered the houses with dogs, bombs and gun shootings so people went out to see what is happening so my cousin was shot dead and left on ground to bleed and then they left the area" Ali said. The entrance of the Israeli army is the first since 1974 when the Disengagement agreement was signed. Local residents are afraid that such kinds of raids might repeat again, especially that no reason was given to arrest the individuals. The Israeli army said that the captives belong to Hamas and this is what the locals in the town strongly deny.
