Italy - June 11, 2025 Rome, Italy – At 9:45 a.m. on June 11, four activists from the movement BRUCIAMO TUTTO staged a nonviolent protest at the entrance of the Ministry of Economy and Finance. One person unfurled a banner with the campaign name “An Income To Escape” and declared the start and purpose of the action. Two others threw large amounts of fake lilac-colored zero-euro banknotes onto the ground. A second banner was then revealed, reading “6489 applications. Only 2772 accepted. What about the others?” referring to the many denied Freedom Income requests. At 10:19 a.m., police arrived, identified the activists, and filed complaints while keeping them on site. An activist said the protest aimed to expose the lack of funds for the Freedom Income, a measure designed to help people facing domestic violence. The fake banknotes symbolized the missing money in the system. Since May 2024, only 42 percent of requests have been approved, despite applicants meeting all requirements. The rejections are due to insufficient funding. The protest highlighted that this situation endangers lives. Even limited funds could help survivors escape abuse. The fake banknotes represented the aid that is not reaching those in need. Chains used during the protest symbolized how victims remain tied to institutions unable to protect them. In 2025, 24 femicides have been confirmed in Italy, with 21 committed by close family members or partners. Activists questioned how many could have been prevented with better support. BRUCIAMO TUTTO demands improvements to the current Freedom Income: a €500 monthly contribution for up to 12 months to women in domestic violence situations, supported by certified centers. They also call for a cultural shift and legislative reforms to ensure safety and freedom for all, regardless of gender identity.
