BEIRUT, LEBANON - JUNE 19, 2025: Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri met with US Special Envoy for Syria and Ambassador to Türkiye Tom Barrack at the Parliament headquarters in Beirut on Thursday, June 19. US Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson also attended the meeting. Speaking to the press following the talks, Barrack warned that it would be a poor decision for Hezbollah to become involved in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. He stated that the US message to Lebanon comes amid global instability, and expressed hope that Lebanon, with its new leadership, will enter a phase of peace and recovery. Barrack added that Washington remains committed to assisting Lebanon and is optimistic about the peace and recovery process. According to a statement from the Lebanese Parliament, Speaker Berri emphasized during the meeting that the Lebanese army continues to fulfill its commitments to implementing the ceasefire agreement with Israel and UN Security Council Resolution 1701. He accused Israel of consistently violating the ceasefire, failing to withdraw from occupied Lebanese territories, and continuing its aggression against Lebanon. Berri underlined the importance of extending the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which operates in southern Lebanon, saying that halting these violations is a key step towards securing Lebanon’s stability and initiating reconstruction efforts. UNIFIL was established in 1978 following Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon during the country's civil war. That year, the UN Security Council called on Israel to withdraw its forces and deployed UNIFIL to confirm the withdrawal, restore peace, and support the Lebanese government in reasserting its authority over the south. In 2006, after conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701, calling for Israel’s withdrawal behind the "Blue Line" and the disarmament of all groups in the area between the Blue Line and Lebanon’s Litani River, allowing only Lebanese armed forces and UNIFIL to operate in the zone.
