Called upon by the group “Support for the Palestinian People,” the protesters gathered in the city center and denounced Serbia’s military support for Israel. Demonstrators displayed banners with messages like “Halt weapons for genocide,” “Israel kills kids, the US shields the perpetrators,” and “Liberate Palestine.” The demonstration followed Serbian President Aleksandar Vucić’s recent claim in The Jerusalem Post that Serbia promptly supplied Israel with military aid after the Gaza attacks began on October 7, 2023, boasting he was Europe’s sole leader trading arms with Israel. Reports last year suggested Serbia’s 2024 arms exports to Israel surpassed €23 million, though no official confirmation was issued. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 56,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
