While hostilities have paused momentarily, the likelihood of lasting peace between Iran and Israel remains slim, according to a Turkish analyst reflecting on the ceasefire that ended 12 days of intense strikes between the two countries. Speaking to the China Global Television Network (CGTN) in Istanbul, Cem Ogulturk, a researcher at the Turkish National Defense University's Ataturk Strategic Research Institute, cast doubts on the prospect of long-term peace. Despite Israel and Iran confirming the truce on Tuesday and agreeing to halt hostilities, Ogulturk expressed skepticism about a lasting resolution. The analyst attributes the fragile peace to ongoing developments in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli military operations continue to inflict significant suffering and damage. He also noted that Israel's diplomatic moves could shape future nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States. "I don't think a peace agreement will materialize in the short term, but efforts toward peace will certainly keep regional relations with Israel closely tied to the developments in Gaza. However, the possibility of coming together or initiating dialog with Israel, especially if it leads to renewed negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, can be considered a promising development," said Ogulturk. Ogulturk believes that Türkiye could play a role in mediating the high-stakes nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran, if both sides agree to return to the negotiating table. "The negotiations between the U.S. and Iran - nuclear talks - had begun in Oman. But it is possible that future stages of those talks could take place in Türkiye because, from the perspective of both countries, Türkiye has earned a serious reputation as a credible country, especially in mediation. So, moving forward in this context is indeed possible," he said. On June 13, Israel launched airstrikes on multiple targets across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, killing several senior commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians. The attacks came just before Iran and the United States were expected to resume indirect nuclear negotiations in Muscat, Oman, on June 15. In response, Iran launched waves of missile and drone strikes on Israel. The exchanges of fire between Iran and Israel in the following days were punctuated by the United States' bombing of Iranian nuclear sites on June 21 and Iran's retaliatory missile strike at a U.S. air base in Qatar two days later. The 12-day conflict ended with a ceasefire between Iran and Israel on Tuesday. Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi told the country's state broadcaster IRIB on Thursday that no arrangement or commitment had been made to resume negotiations with the United States. He accused the U.S. of betraying Iran during previous rounds of negotiations on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal and lifting U.S. sanctions. SHOTLIST: FILE: Tel Aviv, Israel - June 2021 1.
