Venice, Italy - June 24, 2025 On June 24, 2025, Extinction Rebellion dropped a massive banner from a crane facing the Hotel Danieli, where guests of Jeff Bezos’s luxurious wedding are staying. The banner read: “Tassare i ricchi per ridare al pianeta” (“Tax the rich to give back to the planet”) and featured Disney’s Robin Hood. Four activists, dressed as Robin Hood, climbed the crane after construction workers left, secured with harnesses and helmets. The group targeted the site symbolically, as Hotel Danieli hosts many ultra-wealthy guests. Jorge, one of the activists, said, “Saturday in Venice, the second richest man in the world will marry. A display of wealth that recalls the times of Robin Hood and Prince John.” Extinction Rebellion called for taxing the ultra-rich to fund a fair ecological transition. They criticized the excessive consumption of billionaires, citing reports that show the top 1% are responsible for 20% of global temperature increases. News of the extravagant wedding, with 80 private jets and 27 outfit changes planned for the bride, fueled the protests. Local groups including Morion, ANPI, and citizen committees joined under the “No space for Bezos” campaign, accusing Mayor Brugnaro of selling out the city. On Monday, activists had already dropped a banner reading “Bezos” with a red X from the bell tower of San Giorgio, where the ceremony may be held. The protest sparked backlash from Mayor Brugnaro and Governor Zaia, who welcomed Bezos for bringing visibility and wealth to Venice. The controversy reached international headlines, prompting Bezos’s team to release statements about supporting Venice through nonprofits and local services. Jorge of Extinction Rebellion responded: “Venice, Italy, and the planet don’t need gracious philanthropic handouts. We are citizens, not subjects.” The message will be amplified again on June 28, during a large protest planned near the final wedding celebration at the Arsenale.
