China: Giant panda spends 1st birthday at Chongqing zoo
The Chongqing Zoo in southwest China held a birthday party for its one-year-old giant panda "Qi Ying" on Saturday. As visitors gathered around the panda enclosure, the keepers carried the female bear outside to the carefully prepared site of the birthday party featuring a special fruit cake, snowballs, floral decorations and a birthday banner. To complete the celebration, the staff also arranged a fun ritual called "zhuazhou" which is traditionally seen during a human child's first birthday party. Like the way parents lay out various objects that symbolize career choices or personality traits for the child to pick, the keepers prepared 10 items, including a bowl, a Chinese writing brush, a bamboo sword, a basketball, and an abacus for the "birthday girl". Not unexpectedly and to the delight of the crowd, the bear grabbed the bamboo sword almost without hesitation, and after playing with it for a while, she moved on to the writing brush. Qi Ying, being the star attraction at the zoo, received well-wishers of all ages on the special day, many of whom brought their video cameras to record the joyous moment. "We also wish it will be healthy and safe," said Lu Jing, a visitor who came to the zoo with her friend. "I think the giant panda is really adorable. I wish her a happy one-year birthday," said Huang Zihan, a young boy. According to the zoo, Qi Ying, who weighed just 185 grams at birth, has reached nearly 40 kilograms in growing over the past 12 months. And unlike the tiny lamb-like newborn cub, the panda has turned quite naughty and playfully stubborn, which have won her numerous fans. "As the panda grows up, she has developed a bit of hot temper. She may get self-willed and naughty, but I still think that her nature of cuteness has never changed," said Shi Lei, a panda keeper at the zoo.
