ORHAN OKULU AND HIS TEAM CELEBRATING VICTORYEDIRNE, TÜRKİYE - JULY 6: Orhan Okulu became the Baspehlivan (chief wrestler) at the 664th Historical Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival, one of Türkiye’s oldest and most prestigious traditional sports events, by defeating Feyzullah Akturk in the final match on Sunday, July 6. The tournament took place in Edirne, a city in northwestern Türkiye, and thrilled spectators with its fierce and competitive bouts. The final bout in the Baspehlivan (chief wrestler) category was held at the historic Sarayici Er Meydanı (Wrestling Field). Orhan Okulu had previously eliminated Seckin Duman, Cengizhan Simsek, Erkan Tas, and Enes Dogan. Feyzullah Akturk reached the final by defeating Ertugrul Dagdeviren, Ali Gurbuz, Ismail Koc, and Ali Ihsan Batmaz. After a traditional prayer by Bascazgir (chief announcer) Emin Ger, the two wrestlers took to the field: Orhan Okulu, a 36-year-old from Kumluca in Antalya, is known as the "wrestler with no reverse gear" for his never-give-up style, and a former Kirkpinar champion in 2015 and 2018. Feyzullah Akturk, a 26-year-old from Manisa, nicknamed “the hard rock,” has been competing in the top division since 2022 and he is known for bringing his endurance from mat wrestling to the traditional oil wrestling arena. The crowd gave a standing ovation as both wrestlers performed the ceremonial pesrev (traditional warm-up ritual). The match was paused twice in the opening minutes due to a cut above Orhan Okulu’s eyebrow. After resuming, the bout continued with high intensity, occasionally drawing reactions from the crowd due to borderline moves. While Feyzullah Akturk opted for a cautious strategy, Orhan Okulu pressed the action. In the 19th minute, Okulu managed to unbalance and bring down Akturk, securing victory. With this triumph, Orhan Okulu was crowned Baspehlivan (chief wrestler) of the 664th Historical Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Tournament, further cementing his legacy in Türkiye’s centuries-old wrestling tradition.
