New York, United States - July 01, 2025 Climate activists from Extinction Rebellion NYC staged a dramatic protest at the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue on Tuesday morning. Chanting “Dump Trump, Apple!” the group disrupted business at the flagship location and spray-painted messages on the glass entrance. The graffiti included “Boycott (Apple)” and “Tim + Trump = Toxic.” One protester was arrested. The demonstration targeted what the group calls Big Tech’s climate hypocrisy. Activists pointed to the attendance of Tim Cook, Sundar Pichai, and Mark Zuckerberg at Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration. The same executives had previously voiced support for the Paris Agreement. According to Extinction Rebellion NYC, Apple, Google, and Meta were part of the “America Is All In” coalition during Trump’s first term but backed away in December 2024. They declined to sign a letter reaffirming their support for climate action. The group cited recent climate models projecting 3°C of warming by 2060, and another study warning of up to 4 billion deaths this century. The protest followed news of deadly rainfall in Central Texas, where 67 lives have been lost. Activists also condemned Big Tech’s role in fueling carbon emissions through energy-hungry AI data centers. They pointed to Google’s greenhouse gas emissions rising over 50% since 2019. A Trump executive order signed on April 8, 2025, titled "Reinvigorating America’s Beautiful Clean Coal Industry," will use coal to power AI facilities. Activists called this a move that will “destroy livelihoods” and “hurt people and our planet.” Extinction Rebellion NYC urged the public to boycott tech companies supporting fossil fuels and authoritarianism.
