Israel's Security Cabinet has approved a plan to take over Gaza City, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement on Friday. The statement said that the Security Cabinet meeting had passed by majority vote the so-called "five principles for ending the war," which include disarming Hamas; returning all hostages, whether alive or dead; achieving the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip; maintaining Israel's security control over the Gaza Strip; and establishing an alternative civilian government that belongs neither to Hamas nor to the Palestinian Authority. According to Israeli media, it remains unclear why the statement mentioned only taking control of Gaza City in the northern part of the enclave, rather than the full occupation of the entire Gaza Strip as previously declared by Netanyahu in an interview with the U.S. television network Fox News. At least 9,750 Palestinians have been killed and over 40,000 others injured since Israel renewed its intensive strikes in Gaza on March 18 following a two-month ceasefire, taking the total death toll since the conflict erupted in October 2023 to more than 61,250, with over 152,000 injured, Gaza-based health authorities said Thursday.
