Honolulu, United States - August 09, 2025 A 60-foot passenger boat named Discovery was forced aground by powerful surf near Kewalo Basin Harbor on the morning of August 9, 2025. The vessel battled towering waves and was tossed violently, nearly capsizing before coming to rest in shallow waters roughly two feet deep. Two experienced crew members were aboard when the boat ran aground around 8 a.m., during peak swells and low tide. The operator said two large waves hit the stern, causing loss of propulsion and steering control. No mechanical failures have been reported, and the cause remains under investigation. Fuel, oil, and batteries were removed promptly to prevent pollution, with plans to tow the vessel away at high tide Sunday afternoon. Eyewitnesses described the boat as being lifted and pushed by the surf like a giant surfboard—an extraordinary sight for a boat of its size. The Discovery eventually drifted against a concrete seawall lining the shore. Atlantis Adventures, owner of the vessel, confirmed the crew was unharmed. The company is working with authorities to safely remove and inspect the boat before it returns to service. The Discovery is Coast Guard certified and undergoes regular inspections. Its captains are trained and certified to ferry passengers to the Waikiki submarine dive site. A local water photographer noted the south shore was experiencing some of the largest swells in three years and praised the captain’s efforts to avoid greater danger.
