Ceremonies took place in the villages of Murataga, Sandallar, and Atlilar in Famagusta, where residents were massacred by the Greek Cypriot armed group EOKA B in 1974, as well as at the site in Nicosia’s Kucuk Kaymakli area where Turkish journalist Adem Yavuz was shot and later died from his wounds. The first ceremony was held at the Murataga-Sandallar Martyrs’ Cemetery, where victims of the August 14, 1974 killings were buried after being found in mass graves. Senior officials including TRNC President Ersin Tatar, Parliament Speaker Ziya Ozturkler, Prime Minister Unal Ustel, Turkish Ambassador to Lefkosa Ali Murat Basceri, and commanders of Turkish peace forces attended the event alongside ministers, lawmakers, mayors, families of victims, and citizens. The ceremony featured the laying of wreaths, a moment of silence, a rifle salute, and the raising of flags to the national anthem. Following the service at Murataga-Sandallar, another ceremony was held in Atlilar village, where 37 Turkish Cypriots were killed and buried in a mass grave in August 1974. Most victims in the massacres were women and children, the youngest just 16 days old and the oldest 95 years old. A separate commemoration was held in the UN-controlled buffer zone at the site where journalist Adem Yavuz, along with colleagues Ergin Konuksever and Cengiz Kapkin, came under fire from Greek Cypriot forces on August 14, 1974. Participants, including representatives of press associations, veterans’ groups, and martyr families, crossed into the buffer zone under UN escort to lay wreaths at the vehicle remains where Yavuz was shot, paying tribute to him and other civilians killed during the conflict.
