TULKARM, PALESTINE - AUG. 15, 2025: Israel has been continuing its attacks on the West Bank’s Jenin, Tulkarm and Nur Shams refugee camps for about 200 days, largely destroying infrastructure and forcibly displacing Palestinians from their homes.

On Aug. 10, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz said that Israeli forces would remain in the West Bank refugee camps at least until the end of the year, claiming the camps were “nests of terrorism” financed and armed by Iran to create a new front against Israel.

Faisal Salameh, head of the Tulkarm Refugee Camp Popular Committee, said the Israeli attacks ongoing since January are intended to displace residents.

He said about 2,000 housing units have been demolished in the Tulkarm and Nur Shams camps, thousands of other homes have been damaged, and 25,000 Palestinians have been displaced.

Palestinians living in these camps say the Israeli army’s presence is part of a plan aimed at liquidating the refugee issue.

Nihad al-Shawish, head of the Nur Shams Refugee Camp Popular Committee, said Israel has completely destroyed the camp.

Al-Shawish said the aim of continuing the attacks is to turn the camp into an uninhabitable place and push people to seek alternatives.

He stressed that the attacks are part of a political project designed to force Palestinians to accept Israel’s terms, but said Palestinians will not negotiate over their “rights.”

The international community, including the UN, considers the Israeli settlements illegal under international law.

The UN has repeatedly warned that continued settlement expansion threatens the viability of a two-state solution, a framework seen as key to resolving the decades-long Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

In an advisory opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
