Bergen, Norway - August 18, 2025 Hundreds of activists have blocked the country’s largest oil refinery, Mongstad in Bergen, calling for an immediate plan to abandon polluting energy sources such as gas and oil. The protest included climate activists Greta Thunberg, Carola Rackete, and singer Aurora. The action was organized by Extinction Rebellion and the Green Youth Movement. Protesters blocked three land entrances and one by sea, using kayaks to stop operations. The initiative is part of the Nordic Climate Justice Coalition, which is mobilizing across Norway from August 16 to 23 to challenge the image of Nordic countries as green leaders and protest the country’s oil industry. Lotta, an Italian artist and Extinction Rebellion activist, said, “I come from Emilia Romagna, a land devastated by repeated floods. I am here because it is time for major oil and gas producers – Norway and Italy – to take responsibility and start a plan to exit fossil fuels immediately.” Simone, another activist arrested while blocking an Equinor oil ship by kayak, added, “Norway has no exit plan from fossil fuels despite being Europe’s largest oil producer. Equinor is responsible for the climate crisis causing hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide. It is time to leave fossil fuels, now.” Greta Thunberg declared, “We are here because it is clear oil has no future. Fossil fuels bring only death and destruction, and we must pressure morally corrupt producers like Norway, who have blood on their hands.” Singer Aurora explained her participation: “When no one takes responsibility, we must. Oil destroys the sea and air and drives nations to war. It belongs to the past.” Extinction Rebellion announced that actions will continue throughout the week, including in Oslo.
