China: Dilapidated water tower reborn as thriving reading hub in east China city
Storyline: Dilapidated water tower reborn as thriving reading hub in east China city [Voice_over] An urban renewal project in the eastern Chinese city of Longgang that restored a dilapidated water tower into a reading hub has been thriving since it opened to the public. Originally built in 1983, the "Water Tower" was transformed into a 1,600-square-meter three-story reading hub. Architects kept many of the building's old features like its faucets, water pipes and water meters for a touch of nostalgia. As the city's new landmark, the library has become an important place for residents to read, study, and learn. On one recent evening, children participated in a hands-on science workshop. [Sound_bite] Local resident: "The kids love these activities. They can get involved." [Sound_bite] Zhang Shenglun, Deputy head, Longgang's Natural Resources and Urban Planning Bureau: "The Longyue Road Water Tower witnessed Longgang's early development. By transforming it into a reading hub, we can preserve the city's memory and give it a new cultural function. We revitalize the once-deserted site, making it a vibrant urban landmark." [Voice_over] Since opening, the venue has attracted 200,000 visitors and helped generate more than 4 million U.S. dollars in consumer revenues. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
