The demonstrators assembled at the Bentbasa point on the Miljacka River, carrying Palestinian flags and banners that read "Stop the genocide." They launched handmade paper boats into the water, on which they had written messages including "lift the blockade." The event was held in support of an international aid fleet, which set sail recently for Gaza. The participants chanted "Free Palestine" slogans during the demonstration, which also drew support from tourists present in the city. The Global Sumud Flotilla, an international civilian aid fleet formed with support from groups in over 44 countries, departed from Barcelona, Spain, on August 31st. Its stated goals are to show solidarity with Palestine and challenge the Israeli naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. In a coordinated departure, several boats carrying 300 tons of aid supplies also set sail from Genoa, Italy, on the same day to join the flotilla in the Mediterranean. The name "Sumud" is an Arabic word meaning "steadfastness" or "unshakable resolve." The concept emerged among Palestinians after the 1967 Six-Day War, symbolizing resilience and a commitment to remain on their land. It encompasses the preservation of Palestinian identity and culture and often refers to non-violent forms of resistance and civil disobedience. The olive tree and the figure of a pregnant peasant woman are common symbols used to represent the idea of Sumud. Writing by Sibel Uygun
