1. NORTHERN LIGHTS ILLUMINATING NIGHT SKY ALASKA, US - SEPT. 15: The skies over Alaska lit up on Monday, Sept. 15, with a striking display of northern lights, or aurora borealis.

Green and purple waves of light were visible from downtown Anchorage and surrounding mountain areas.

Locals and tourists watched and photographed the rare natural phenomenon.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said a geomagnetic storm also made the aurora visible across northern states including Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan, as well as parts of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
