Israeli forces have been carrying out relentless air and ground assaults, reducing entire blocks to rubble while issuing evacuation orders designed to empty Gaza City of its residents. The attacks are part of Operation Gideon 2, approved by Defense Minister Israel Katz on Aug. 21, to occupy Gaza City. Since early August, Israeli forces have bombarded residential towers and apartment blocks, employing artillery, drone strikes and booby-trapped robots. The Israeli army said Wednesday it has carried out more than 150 air and artillery strikes on Gaza City over the past two days, part of what it called an expanding ground offensive to occupy the enclave’s largest urban center. Footage shows Palestinian families, both on foot and in vehicles, clutching the few belongings they can carry as they stream southward along Gaza’s coastal al-Rashid Street, moving in endless lines day and night under the shadow of Israeli bombs and assaults. On Tuesday, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory confirmed that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. The commission’s report concluded that Israel committed four out of the five acts of genocide defined in the “Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.” It explained that these acts are: killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the destruction of Palestinians in whole or in part, and imposing measures intended to prevent births. The Israeli army has killed almost 65,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave uninhabitable and led to famine and the spread of diseases.
