On the afternoon of September 15, rare and eerie cloud formations appeared over Chaoyang, Liaoning. The cloud base was covered with dense folds and vortexes, creating a dramatic three-dimensional effect.

Witnesses said it was their first time seeing such a formation, describing it as strange, oppressive, and even resembling skulls, which looked quite frightening.

Meteorological experts explained that the phenomenon was “asperitas clouds,” formed when undulating stratocumulus clouds rapidly churn under the influence of a weather front or strong convection. When irregular atmospheric waves overlap to the extreme, the accumulated cloud masses fold, creating this rare spectacle.
