ALEPPO, SYRIA - SEPT. 27, 2025: The iconic Aleppo Citadel, one of Syria’s most important historical landmarks, reopened to visitors after a three-month restoration project.
The reopening ceremony gathered Syrian officials, Turkish diplomats, and locals celebrating the return of the fortress to public life.
The project included extensive restoration of the outer walls, interior spaces, and the castle’s infrastructure — with water, electricity, and sewage systems fully renewed. The work was funded by the Hasan International Foundation and carried out by local experts and contractors.
Siraca Misri, deputy director of Aleppo Antiquities and Museums, highlighted that the citadel, part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1986, had been systematically damaged during the conflict but was now restored to reflect the city’s cultural legacy. She added that future plans include restoring the citadel’s museum, cafeteria, and northern residential blocks.
The Aleppo Citadel, perched at the heart of the city’s historic center, is one of the oldest and largest castles in the world, with origins dating back to at least the 3rd millennium BC. Beyond its military and architectural significance, it remains a cultural hub — with shops at the entrance showcasing traditional Aleppan crafts like soap-making, weaving, and woodwork.
