France’s Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu Resigns After Less Than A Month. France’s Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has resigned, just 26 days after his appointment and less than a day after unveiling his new cabinet. The announcement came following a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace on Monday morning. Lecornu, a former armed forces minister and Macron loyalist, faced fierce criticism in the National Assembly over his cabinet which was largely unchanged from the previous government of François Bayrou. Parties threatened to vote it down, prompting the shock resignation. The resignation adds to political instability in France, which has struggled with a hung parliament since snap elections in July 2024. The lack of a clear majority has made it difficult for any prime minister to pass legislation or the annual budget. Lecornu becomes France’s fifth prime minister in under two years, while some parties are now calling for early elections though Macron has insisted he will remain in office until his term ends in 2027.
