ALGERIAN-BORN MEMBER OF GERMAN DELEGATION MOHAMED BELKAID SPEAKING TO REPORTER (English)ATHENS, GREECE - OCT. 7: Activists deported by Israel arrived in Athens on Monday, Oct. 7, aboard a special charter flight organized by the Greek Foreign Ministry, following an Israeli attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla, which sought to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip. The group, consisting of 161 activists including 27 Greek nationals, said Israel’s assault would not deter them from continuing their efforts to support Gaza. The Global Sumud Flotilla, en route to break the Israeli blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, approached Gaza waters on the evening of Oct 1. The Israeli army attacked the flotilla, illegally seizing dozens of boats and ships and detaining hundreds of their passengers. It is the largest flotilla to ever set out collectively to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Since October 2023, the Israeli military has killed over 67,000 Palestinians in Gaza — most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave uninhabitable and has led to mass displacement, starvation and the proliferation of disease.
