Chancellor Rachel Reeves has been warned by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) to avoid “directionless tinkering and half-baked fixes” when preparing next month's Budget. The call comes amid widespread expectations that taxes may rise as the government seeks to meet self-imposed fiscal rules. The IFS cautioned that some tax increases could be “especially economically harmful,”urging the chancellor to strike a careful balance between funding public services and supporting economic growth.The Treasury stressed that Reeves intends to deliver a Budget that funds public services while encouraging investment.
