SNAP benefits are set to expire Nov. 1, becoming a flashpoint in the government shutdown, which has now entered its 29th day. The shutdown, the second-longest in U.S. history, began Oct. 1 after a breakdown in negotiations over federal spending priorities. Thousands of federal employees have been furloughed or are working without pay, while many government services have been reduced or suspended.
