SURIN, THAILAND - NOV: Life has begun to return to normal along the Thai-Cambodian border following a peace agreement signed by the two countries, effectively ending a period of military clashes.
According to an Anadolu correspondent on the ground, security measures have been scaled back in border villages, allowing residents to return to their homes. Repair efforts are also ongoing in residential areas that sustained damage during the recent conflicts.
The de-escalation process began with a trilateral meeting hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, where Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an unconditional ceasefire on July 28.
This initial agreement was solidified on Aug. 7, when both sides reached a 13-point deal that included allowing observers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to monitor the ceasefire along the contested border.
The peace process reached a significant milestone on Oct. 26, with the formal signing of a peace agreement in Kuala Lumpur. The ceremony was attended by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
In a further step toward lasting peace, Cambodian and Thai officials met on Nov. 1 to discuss the first phase of removing heavy and destructive weapons from their shared border areas. This move is seen as a crucial measure to build confidence and reduce military tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations.
The ceasefire was cosigned by President Trump alongside his Malaysian, Thai, and Cambodian counterparts on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur.
