DAMASCUS, SYRIA - NOV. 5: A meeting was held in Damascus on Wednesday, November 5, to address the issue of missing and disappeared persons in Syria.
The event was organized by the Syrian Center for Identity Determination, the Syrian National Commission on Missing Persons, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the UN-established Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP).
Participants discussed principles of cooperation between Syrian and international bodies. A joint statement emphasized the commitment of the three international mechanisms to strengthen technical and institutional collaboration aimed at ensuring truth, dignity, and justice.
Karla Quintana, UN Assistant Secretary-General and head of the IIMP, previously said that the search for missing persons must start immediately, noting that the process had already been delayed. She added that hundreds of thousands of missing Syrians are being investigated, calling the effort unprecedented in global history.
Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, ending the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963. Sharaa’s new transitional administration was formed in January.
