Trump exempts Hungary from Russian oil sanctions for one year. The White House announced that Hungary will be exempted from U.S. sanctions on the purchase of Russian oil for a period of one year. The decision was announced after Donald Trump’s meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Washington – According to Politico. It’s a major success for the Hungarian leader, who has long called for easing the restrictions – his country depends on Russian energy supplies for 86 percent of its needs. Orbán called the decision “a full and unlimited exemption from sanctions on oil and gas”. Trump admitted that he understands Hungary’s difficult situation, as the country has no access to the sea and limited possibilities to import resources from other regions. During his visit to Washington, Orbán also signed agreements on cooperation in nuclear energy and the purchase of American gas and defense equipment. The Prime Minister described this meeting as the beginning of “the second phase” of warming relations with the United States.
