UNCAPTIONED: Eurovision Tightens Voting and Promotion Rules After Israel Controversy
Eurovision Tightens Voting and Promotion Rules After Israel Controversy. Eurovision announces major rule changes following backlash over Israel’s strong public vote result at the 2025 contest. Fans will now be limited to 10 votes each—down from 20—to reduce the risk of manipulation. Juries will return to the semi-finals to balance musical quality, diversity and public preference. New restrictions ban broadcasters and contestants from participating in third-party promotional campaigns, including government-backed efforts. The move follows reports that an Israeli government agency funded ads and used state social media to boost votes for its entry. Director Martin Green says feedback from fans and member nations showed concern about “undue promotion” and pressure from third parties. Several countries, including Spain, Ireland and Iceland, have threatened to boycott the 2026 contest if Israel participates amid the Gaza war. Organisers say the new rules aim to keep Eurovision neutral, prevent coordinated or fraudulent voting, and reassure members ahead of December’s key meeting.
