Italy: Climate Activist Drops 30 Tables To Protest Missed Climate Promises
Italy - November 21, 2025 A climate activist placed 30 green tables outside the Regione Piemonte tower and raised a banner saying “COP30: Missing Tables”. The action took place as the climate talks in Belem reached their final days, aiming to denounce unmet commitments from the Government and the Region. The activist stressed the need for institutions to take part seriously in international negotiations that decide the future of humanity. Maria, present at the scene, said the overturned tables represent “all the missed opportunities and broken promises of over 30 years of climate conferences, starting with the failed goals of the Paris Agreements”. She added that “while in Piemonte we are losing our mountains, the Italian Government has in fact boycotted this year’s COP: physically and politically”. Her comments refer to the absence of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni from Belem, where Minister Antonio Tajiani urged countries to avoid a dogmatic approach. Maria said the Government and Regione Piemonte “have for years spoken of wanting to pursue a pragmatic and sensible approach to the transition. But how do they intend to do so without allocating the necessary funds?” Nationally, the 2025 budget law excluded the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan. Instead, the Government is investing in biofuel projects presented by Pichetto Frattin during the preCOP, despite warnings from more than one hundred scientists about environmental and social risks linked to expanding biofuels. Regionally, Piemonte assigned 70 million euros for artificial snowmaking in 2025, even though 76 ski resorts have been abandoned because snowfall no longer reaches those altitudes. In recent months, Italy has opposed major European climate policies, including the 2040 emission-reduction goals, electric vehicle standards, and industrial decarbonization plans, while authorizing new drilling. This stance has weakened the European Union’s climate leadership and continues at COP30, where Italy is the only European country besides Poland not supporting a fossil-fuel phase-out roadmap. Meanwhile, Italy is the most affected country in Europe by extreme events. Heatwaves caused 4,500 deaths in 2025, including 230 in Torino, with economic losses estimated at 11.9 billion euros. Maria concluded that opposing climate policies “condemns Italy to fall behind in a transition that will be inevitable, and the more we delay it, the more dramatic it will be for the population. We cannot afford to miss another table.”
