Maduro Brandishes Sword and Vows to Resist Any US Attempt to Overthrow His Government. Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro vows to defy any U.S. effort to topple his government, telling supporters in Caracas that “failure is not an option.” Dressed in military fatigues and brandishing a sword, Maduro urges citizens to defend “every inch” of Venezuela from what he calls imperialist aggression. Rising tensions follow a wave of U.S. military strikes on alleged drug-trafficking vessels in international waters since September, leaving at least 80 people dead. Washington says many of the boats originated from Venezuela, a claim Maduro rejects as an attack on national sovereignty. Cuba accuses the U.S. of seeking a violent overthrow in Venezuela, calling its military posture in the region “exaggerated and aggressive.” Critics question the legality of U.S. operations, with a recent poll showing only 29% of American voters support the policy. Venezuelan officials say Washington’s motives are economic, alleging the U.S. wants the country’s oil, gas, gold and other natural resources. Trump, who—like Biden before him—does not recognise Maduro’s presidency, says he may speak with the Venezuelan leader but warns he is prepared for “the hard way” if necessary.
