Gaza Strip Municipalities Union Deputy Chairman Alaa al-Batta and Khan Younis Mayor Alaaddin al-Batta told journalists at a rainwater collection site in northern Khan Younis that the worsening fuel shortage has crippled essential services.
The deputy chairman said the fuel supplied in the 50 days since the cease-fire took effect has covered barely five days of operations, including clearing roads, removing debris and sustaining emergency services.
He noted that more than 85% of municipal facilities and vehicles were directly hit and destroyed during Israeli attacks, adding that ongoing fuel restrictions constitute a breach of the cease-fire agreement that came into force on Oct. 10.
Officials cautioned that further delays in fuel deliveries could trigger severe flooding and endanger displaced Palestinians living in overcrowded camps.
Israel is accused of imposing restrictions on the entry of aid and fuel into Gaza, violating the ceasefire agreement.
A ceasefire agreement mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye and backed by the US came into force on Oct. 10 between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Phase one of the ceasefire deal includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.
Israel has killed more than 70,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured nearly 171,000 others in attacks in Gaza since October 2023.
