Spain - December 04, 2025 Guardia Civil has presented a collection of historic artworks and objects recovered in Operation MIRUM-CID, after investigators uncovered an alleged plan to sell around thirty pieces of significant artistic value. The investigation, carried out by the Judicial Police Unit of the Burgos Command as part of its mandate to protect Historical Heritage, has so far led to the recovery of numerous catalogued works. The items were seized during court-authorized searches at the monasteries of Santa María de Bretonera (Burgos) and Santa Clara de Orduna (Bizkaia). Among the pieces displayed is a 16th-century polychrome wood carving of the Virgin of Bretonera, considered one of the most emblematic devotional works of the Burgos monastery. Also recovered is the 14th-century Cristo de Belorado, a sculpture whose medieval carving remains almost completely preserved, though its cross is of modern construction. Officers additionally seized two Baroque oil paintings — one of the Immaculate Conception and another depicting the Stigmatization of Saint Francis — both attributed to the same 17th-century Castilian school workshop and in notable condition. An original 16th-century will belonging to María de Velasco, an abbess of the monastery, was found fully wrapped in a private room of the Orduna convent, allegedly prepared for sale. The investigation remains open. Around thirty works have been recovered so far, and their value will be assessed in detail with support from the Burgos Museum. All pieces are at the disposal of the Court of Instruction in Briviesca (Burgos), which is directing the case, and will be transferred to the Archdiocese to ensure their conservation and custody.
