Sapporo, Japan - December 12, 2025 On December 12, 2025, X user Nissyhbf shared footage showing the effects of a strong offshore earthquake that struck Japan’s north-eastern region at 11:44 local time on Friday. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 6.7 and struck off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture at a depth of 20 kilometers, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. It was followed by several smaller quakes with magnitudes ranging from 4.3 to 5.7. Authorities issued a tsunami advisory for parts of Japan’s eastern coast, warning that waves could reach one metre. Later, waves of 20 centimeters were recorded in Aomori and Hokkaido prefectures, and the advisory was lifted a few hours later. Thousands of residents received evacuation orders through the Japanese emergency warning app NERV. The quake comes days after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the same region, injuring dozens of people. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that Friday’s quake did not fall under the earlier megaquake advisory, though authorities continue to urge vigilance.
