La Paz, Bolivia - December 29, 2025 A group of union leaders and workers in Bolivia began a hunger strike this week to protest the government’s decision to end long-standing fuel subsidies, part of a broader social backlash against steep fuel price increases, according to local and international reports. The hunger strike — initiated by 16 unionized workers and two other participants at the Federation of Miners headquarters in La Paz — is a deliberate escalation of protests against Supreme Decree 5503, which abolished fuel subsidies that had kept prices artificially low for over two decades.
