UNCAPTIONED: All Victims Identified After Deadly Crans-Montana Bar Fire
All Victims Identified After Deadly Crans-Montana Bar Fire. Swiss police said they have identified the last 16 victims of the New Year’s Eve bar fire at Crans-Montana, confirming all 40 people who died in one of the country’s worst recent disasters. Authorities in Valais canton said forensic work was slow because many victims suffered severe burns, requiring DNA and dental records to confirm identities. Among the final victims identified was 15-year-old Charlotte Niddam, a former pupil of Immanuel College in Hertfordshire, who had been reported missing before her death was confirmed. Police said the victims included teenagers and young adults from Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, Portugal and the UK, highlighting the international impact of the tragedy. Hundreds of residents and visitors joined a silent procession through the resort on Sunday, ending at the destroyed Le Constellation bar, where flowers and tributes were laid. During a memorial service, Bishop Jean-Marie Lovey said condolences had arrived from around the world, including a message of sympathy from Pope Leo XIV. Investigators believe the blaze started when sparkling candles were held too close to the ceiling, and prosecutors confirmed that two bar managers are under criminal investigation. Authorities said 119 people were injured, many seriously, and safety checks at the venue — including ceiling materials, fire extinguishers and escape routes — are now under scrutiny.
