3. ILLUMINATED CHURCH BELL BETHLEHEM, WEST BANK - JAN. 6: Orthodox Christians gathered at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem on Tuesday night, Jan. 6, to attend midnight mass celebrating Christmas.

Worshippers filled the historic site, traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Jesus, as the liturgy began on Orthodox Christmas Eve. Faithful pilgrims and locals assembled in the city to mark the holy occasion.

The Epiphany day marks the beginning of Christmas celebrations by most Orthodox Christians on Jan. 7, later than on Dec. 25 – the date for many other Christians – due to different traditional calendars.

It is one of the Orthodox Church’s most important holidays, commemorating Jesus’ baptism in the River Jordan.
