Residents in and around Birmingham were puzzled on Thursday, January 8 when the sky turned neon pink during severe winter weather brought by Storm Goretti, sparking speculation on social media that it could be the Northern Lights.

The phenomenon was later explained as light from pink LED grow lights at Birmingham City Football Club’s stadium, amplified by falling snow and thick cloud that made the sky highly reflective. Similar sightings were reported in nearby areas as the storm triggered multiple weather warnings across the UK.
