MOSCOW, RUSSIA - JANUARY 9, 2026: Heavy snowfall swept across Russia’s capital, Moscow, on Friday, Jan. 9, covering streets and landmarks and disrupting traffic and daily life across the city.

The snow, which intensified overnight, quickly blanketed Moscow in white, prompting adjustments to public transport schedules and the postponement of outdoor events.

Snow-clearing operations that began overnight continued without interruption on Friday. Russia’s Fobos Weather Centre said snow depth in Moscow had reached 30 centimeters and was expected to increase further.

Moscow Deputy Mayor Pyotr Biryukov said in a statement on social media that extensive efforts were under way to deal with the heavy snowfall. He said large numbers of workers and specialized vehicles had been deployed to clear the city and urged residents to avoid using private cars. Biryukov added that snowfall was expected to continue until Saturday.

Meanwhile, more than 300 international and domestic flights were delayed or cancelled at Moscow airports on Friday due to the unusually heavy snowfall, Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti reported.
