BERLIN, GERMANY - JAN. 14: Greenpeace activists gathered in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday, Jan. 14, to stage a demonstration calling for the swift ratification and implementation of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) agreement.

The organization has welcomed the treaty as a historic step toward protecting marine biodiversity in international waters.

The deal aims to protect marine biodiversity in international waters under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Adopted in June 2023, the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement covers more than two-thirds of the world’s oceans and is seen as a major step toward protecting marine ecosystems beyond national control.

The agreement is set to enter into force on Jan. 17, 2026, once the required number of ratifications is reached.
