Specialist engineers stabilised the wreckage from a deadly train crash in Spain.

Urban search-and-rescue teams from the Second Battalion of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) led efforts to secure the overturned carriages and protect emergency crews working near Adamuz.

Footage shows responders operating at the scene, with the locomotive seen derailed from the tracks as recovery work continued.

The high-speed rail collision killed at least 41 people and injured more than 120 in southern Spain on Sunday evening.

Authorities said the crash occurred when one locomotive derailed and crossed onto an adjacent track, colliding with an oncoming train in Adamuz, Cordoba.

Both trains, one travelling from Malaga to Madrid and the other from Madrid to Huelva on a parallel line, derailed at high speed around 6:40 pm local time.

Local media reported that around 400 people were on board the two vehicles.

Dozens of ambulances, mobile ICUs, and support vehicles were deployed to treat the injured.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
