This footage shows violent Storm Ingrid and Atlantic waves crashing over the famous Dawlish sea wall, with mainline trains continuing along Brunel’s coastal railway as sheets of water slam into the carriages. Several wave impacts were so forceful that sea spray reached our live cameras mounted on top of the three-storey Sea Breeze Café, giving a rare perspective on just how extreme conditions became during storm Ingrid.
Down below, in the stilling basin beneath the viaduct, the force of the sea caused visible damage, including one of the benches being broken by repeated wave strikes. It is a stark reminder of how exposed this stretch of coastline is when powerful storms line up with high tide.
Storm Ingrid brought strong winds, very rough seas and coastal impacts across parts of the UK, and Dawlish once again showed why it is one of the most dramatic places in the country to watch the interaction between railway and ocean.
