This year the winter solstice will fall on December 21. It is the shortest day of the year and is officially the first day of winter.

This year's solstice coincides with an astronomical phenomenon where Jupiter and Saturn will form a rare "Christmas Star" in the night's sky, which hasn't been seen in roughly 800 years.

Astronomers are calling it the Great Conjunction of 2020. It can be observed on December 21 from 3:53 pm if skies are clear.
