MASS EXTINCTION: Underwater footage of Galapagos sea turtles
Scientists have warned that Earth's sixth mass extinction event is underway.
A paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal on July 25 described the massive loss of wildlife as a “biological annihilation” as a result of habitat loss, climate change and other factors.
"In the last few decades, habitat loss, over-exploitation, invasive organisms, pollution, toxification, and more recently climate disruption, as well as the interactions among these factors, have led to the catastrophic declines in both the numbers and sizes of populations of both common and rare vertebrate species," the paper wrote.
In this amazing underwater footage, filmed off the coast of the Galapagos Islands in 2017, endangered sea turtles can be seen enjoying their habitats.
The video, filmed at San Cristóbal Island, shows an Eastern Pacific Green Sea Turtle, an endangered species known to lay its eggs on the Galapagos.
While leatherbacks such as the Eastern and Western Pacific are declining, recent research by ecologist Antonios Mazaris and his team found that, unlike many endangered vertebrates, some sea turtles seem to be making a recovery as a result of conservation efforts.
