Officials in the Philippines have warned people to stay clear of the volatile Mount Mayon volcano after eruptions overnight spread lava and ash for kilometres.

A plume of ash rose five kilometres into the air above the volcano, in Albay province in southeastern Luzon, and spread over neighbouring districts, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said in a statement on Tuesday.

After yesterday's large ash explosion prompting authorities to raise the alert level - meaning a hazardous eruption may be imminent, Mayon volcano has once again erupted, shooting up yet another column of ash in Albay province in the Philippines.

The footage, captured on January 23, shows another massive plume of ash and steam rising up in the air.

At least 30,000 residents have been evacuated since Mayon displayed increased abnormal volcanic activity more than a week ago.
