A car fire in London’s Blackwall Tunnel caused massive traffic delays on February 21.

“I was driving in the Blackwall Tunnel and all of a sudden, the car — which was approximately four cars in front — literally set on fire,” an eyewitness with Whitewood Scaffolding said.

The eyewitness also said “the passengers in the burning car jumped out” and were “lucky to have escaped with their lives.”

The London Fire Brigade’s website reported that the “fire is under control,” but “local road closures and travel disruption is expected to continue for some time while the scene is cleared.”

I was driving in the Blackwall tunnel and all of a sudden, the car - which was approximately 4 cars in front - literally set on fire. As far as i could make out, there was no crash or accident that contributed to this. Everyone slammed their brakes on, the passengers in the burning car jumped out. Lucky to have escaped with their lives. The fire brigade arrived from the south side of the tunnel, on foot, to put the fire out and make the road safe and let us use a different lane to get all the traffic out. They did a great job and we were out of the tunnel within the hour.
